5 Places in and around Lee’s Summit to Take Your Dog

You don’t need to leave your pooch at home when you’re exploring Lees Summit and KCMO! Here are 5 places that are dog-friendly.

Spring is well under way and summer is fast approaching, which means it’s the perfect time of the year to enjoy the outdoors as much as possible. Lee’s Summit, in fact, the entire Kansas City area is known for its greenery and they say that no matter where you are in KCMO you’re no more than 30 minutes from a park. It makes sense, then that many local spots open up patios and host special programs to encourage getting outdoors. One aspect of this that we particularly love at The Residences at New Longview, is quite a few of these outdoor spaces also welcome pets! We love our furry residents here, and would much rather see them out and about instead of stuck at home all day! Read on for five of our favorite local spots to take your furry friend this year.

The Wild Way

The Wild Way is, put simply, a coffee shop that operates through a mobile camper. They’ve taken the tradition of a local coffee shop and put a food truck twist on it. During the winter they stay indoor in their winter warehouse, but while it’s nice out they’re traveling around bringing a delicious cup of coffee to everyone in KCMO. Since they are outdoors, you don’t need to leave your pooch at home while you enjoy an artisanal cup of joe. Check out their website or follow them on social media to find out where they are today!

James A. Reed Memorial Wildlife Area

We really love nature and the outdoors in Lee’s Summit. Case in point, the James A. Reed Memorial Wildlife Area, just south of Highway 50. 731 of the 3,084 acres in the area, the Wildlife Area offers 12 lakes perfect for fishing, as well as areas for camping and hiking. Hound dogs and breeds that enjoy water will especially love the area, and if you’re into hunting or trapping and have a license, no need to leave Lee’s Summit to catch tonight’s meal with your furry helper.

Three Dog Bakery

If you’re a doggy parent Three Dog Bakery is a must-visit. Inspired by a rescue pup with a lot of food allergies, the bakery now specializes in handmade dog treats of all shapes and sizes. Founded in 1989, they even claim to be the world’s first bakery for dogs. Each small batch treat contains only simple, real ingredients perfect for even the most sensitive doggy stomachs, and you can learn more about each ingredient they use on their website. Next time you’re heading toward Country Club Plaza bring your pooch along and pamper them with a special treat.

Longview Lake Park

Another nearby outdoor destination is Longview Lake Park, where you can enjoy all sorts of water fun. Dogs do need to be kept on leashes, but with an entire acre of beach, not to mention 14 picnic shelters and several campgrounds, pups will have plenty of area to roam and get exercise even on a leash. Longview Lake also offers a full-service marine with conveniences such as boat rental, concessions, fishing supplies, and a full-service staff.

Axios

From breakfast to dinner, with a coffee break or happy hour in between, Axios is worth the short drive north to Kansas City’s Brookside neighborhood (stop by on your way home from Three Dog Bakery!). A classic French bistro inspired by owner Chef Emmanuel Langalde’s native Aix-en-Provence cuisine, the menu focuses on fresh, organic, and seasonal ingredients. And the best part? Thanks to the fantastic outdoor patio, you don’t have to leave your furry friend behind while you’re out having a nice dinner.
